Abstract:

Printing process was first invented by the Chinese long ago; unfortunately, an influx of knowledge about modern graphics science and technology from abroad must have caused much trouble in communicating with each other, or even led to misunderstandings among printers because of non-standard translation of technical terms into Chinese. This has prevented us from being cooperative and making progress in the Chinese graphic arts industry.

Since the trade contact and cooperation between Taiwan and Mainland China through Hong Kong has become closer and keener, it is essential that a common language in graphic arts industry be established among these three areas-Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China-by unifying the differed translations of technical terms.

To start with, and to achieve better results, this author wishes to present, by citing adequate examples, some guiding principles of standardizing technical translations for those who are engaged in the work for the unification of translated technical terms in graphic arts industry.
